The sports community is in shock today with the sudden news that Utah Utes running back Ty Jordan has passed away.Β Authorities told TMZ that Jordan shot himself in the hip with a handgun. It would appear that the whole situation was accidental, but we’ll have to wait for further investigation to confirm.
“Following a preliminary investigation, we do believe that this was an accidental shooting, where the victim accidentally shot himself,” Denton Police Department public information officer Allison Beckwith told ESPN.

Ty Jordan was the Pac-12 Offensive Rookie of the Year for the Utah Utes this season, and appeared to have a bright future ahead of him. The small running back rushed for 597 yards and six touchdowns in just five games played. He was named to the All-Pac-12 second team. Ty Jordan was also the first freshman to have three consecutive 100-yard rushing games since 1995.
“Ty’s personality and smile were infectious and he made a huge impact on our program in the short time he was with us,” Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement. “He leaves an indelible mark on each of us and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. From the bottom of our hearts, all of us in the Utah Football Family want to say we love you Ty and may you rest in peace.”
Rest in peace, Ty Jordan.
