The Big Ten Has No Idea What They Are Doing

My dad called me early this morning which usually means someone in the family has died, and this time it was college football. Over the weekend it was being reported that the Power 5 had an emergency meeting over the weekend to decide on the fate of the fall college football season. Then as of this morning it was being reported that the Big Ten held a vote and it was decided 12-2, that the season would be canceled.

I mean, this was everywhere. Apparently Nebraska and Iowa were the only schools to vote to continue with the season. I was angry and disappointed. The Big Ten, and all conferences, had basically six months to come up with a plan, and did nothing. Is this because players were trying to unionize? Or is this the safety of the players? You can make your own conclusion on that but either way, this is a giant disaster. But wait! There’s more! Now they are claiming there wasn’t a vote at all!

What exactly is going on over there? Are they trying to back out of their decision or was one never actually reached? Nebraska was still holding practice this morning and Jim Harbaugh was speaking out in favor of a season. My brain hurts after trying to process all of this, so of course this happened:

From what I have seen, the players do want to play, and had this pandemic been handled correctly, we might not be in this position. But what do I know about handling pandemics? And is the President endorsing the players union? Seems like it. Something I have been wondering all morning is if college football will ever look the same after this year. I hope it looks the same but better, meaning that players start to have a voice at the table.

Yes, I love college football, and it’s the one thing that I look forward to all year. I plan my days around it, I wake up at 6am pst to watch College Gameday, I’m a fan… but this will not affect me in any way like the players. This will not change my life, just my Saturdays. This will be catastrophic for fringe players trying to work their way towards the NFL, student athletes that need academic help, or people who rely on the team for structure and a home environment. What will happen to eligibility and scholarships? I want answers. If they can, at this point, come up with a safe way to play, they should play. And if they can’t, I think the schools should do the right thing and let student athletes that feel safer on campus, stay.

Clearly the Big Ten has a lot to figure out, but fingers crossed that hopefully in a few months we are all arguing about our teams, talking #Pac12AfterDark and making fun of PJ Fleck together again on Twitter. If not, I’ll be ready to start talking about the 2021 season immediately.
