Sean Payton Being Linked To The Bears In A New Bombshell Rumor

Would Sean Payton leave New Orleans for the Chicago Bears?

At this point, we all pretty much know that Matt Nagy is a dead man walking, and the Bears will likely let the head coach finish off the rest of the season before sending him on his way.

But while the initial reports are that the bears would target top coordinators around the league such as Brian Daboll or Kellen Moore, another rumor is going to rile up Bears fans even more:

What if Sean Payton would be interested in the gig?

Albert Breer of The MMQB spoke on this possibility in his latest piece.

“THE NFL’S ANTI-TAMPERING RULES MAKE IT FAR MORE DIFFICULT TO POACH A PEER’S COACH.

BUT IT’S DEFINITELY NOT IMPOSSIBLE. IN FACT, IT USED TO BE RELATIVELY COMMON, EVEN IF IT WAS INCREDIBLY COMPLICATED AND USUALLY CAME AT A VERY HEAVY PRICE…

…THAT SAID, THERE ARE REASONS FOR TEAMS TO INVESTIGATE THAT THIS YEAR, IN PARTICULAR. IF YOU’RE THE BEARS, AND YOU MAKE A CHANGE AFTER THE SEASON, WOULD YOU SEE IF GM RYAN PACE, A FORMER SAINTS EXEC, MIGHT BE ABLE TO LAND NATIVE CHICAGOAN SEAN PAYTON, WHO’S NOW IN A BIT OF QB PURGATORY IN NEW ORLEANS?”

Sean Payton grew up a Bears fan – living in a suburb just outside the city. And while New Orleans wouldn’t be happy to lose the future Hall of Famer, maybe he’s ready for a new challenge.

Without Drew Brees under center, Payton has had a revolving door of Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian play quarterback for him this season. And none of them have been particularly impressive.

A move to Chicago would give Sean Payton the opportunity to mold Justin Fields – something he’s proven over the years he is more than capable of. And perhaps Chicago would be desperate enough to offer Payton the GM role or at least some sort of football ops position.

Sure, it might be a long shot. But the Bears should absolutely kick the tires on Sean Payton before moving forward on their hiring process.
