Heisman Trophy Trust Releases Statement On Reggie Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy

After the new NCAA rule allowing college athletes to benefit off their name, image, and likeness, former USC running back Reggie Bush wants his Heisman Trophy back.

After an investigation revealed that Bush was receiving “improper benefits” during his time as a Trojan, his stats and trophies were stripped from him.

On Thursday, Reggie Bush released a statement about getting his 2005 Heisman Trophy back.

In response, the Heisman Trophy Trust released a statement of their own on the Reggie Bush appeal.

“The Heisman Trust believes the recent decision by the NCAA to allow student athletes the ability to control their name, image and likeness is a positive step in the right direction,” the statement read. “The Heisman Trust supports any legislation that will protect and benefit all student athletes.”

While fans everywhere want to see Reggie Bush get his Heisman back, they’ll likely have to wait a while longer for a response.

According to the Heisman Trophy Trust, it falls squarely on the shoulders of the NCAA whether they can grant Reggie his award back.

“Bush’s 2005 season records remain vacated by the NCAA and, as a result, under the rule set forth by the Heisman Trust and stated on the Heisman Ballot, he is not eligible to be awarded the 2005 Heisman Memorial Trophy. Should the NCAA reinstate Bush’s 2005 status, the Heisman Trust looks forward to welcoming him back to the Heisman family.”

We’re all hoping the NCAA does the right thing, and gives Reggie Bush his Heisman Trophy back. That 2005 season might be the greatest single season in college football history, and it deserves to be in the record books.
