The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores today, which no one saw coming.
Everyone assumed the firing was all about a hiring, enter Jim Harbaugh, who is rumored to want to return to the NFL.
But the assumption that Flores’ firing paves the way for Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh to replace Flores isn’t correct, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Monday after announcing Flores’ departure.
See below:
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross:
"I'm not going to be the person to take Jim Harbaugh from the University of Michigan. I hope he stays there."

These were Ross’ first major public comments in nearly two years. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington also confirmed Harbaugh is not on their radar.
While I realize many are assuming Flores’ departure is tied to Harbaugh’s potential availability, I can assure you that is not the case. The Dolphins are not targeting Jim Harbaugh, per sources. The decision to fire Flores is entirely independent.

Ross spoke on the firing:
“I made a decision today to part ways with Brian Flores,” Ross said. “After evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that key dynamics of our football organization weren’t functioning at a level I want it to be and felt that this decision was in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins.”
The next Dolphins coach apparently will not be Harbaugh.
But who knows, this could just be a bit of misdirection..
