Riverboat Ron Refusing to Rule Out Rotating Smith and Heinicke at Quarterback in Playoffs

Washington Football Team head coach “Riverboat” Ron Rivera made news earlier today when he hinted that he’s looking at the possibility of rotating quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Alex Smith in his team’s playoff game against the Tampa Bay Bucs this Saturday.

With Alex Smith still nursing a strained calf – and still coming off his devastating leg injury – the only other option for Riverboat Ron would be to mix in backup Taylor Heinicke.

“We have to definitely look at that,” Rivera said when asked by ESPN if he’ll look into rotating his quarterbacks. “The truth of the matter is we play a very aggressive defense this week; it’s something we most certainly have to look at.”

Taylor Heinicke played well for the Washington Football Team last weekend when he came into the game in relief of Dwayne Haskins during the fourth quarter. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in an efficient performance. Still, Taylor Heinicke playing in a playoff game is a crazy thing to ponder if you look at the guy’s story.

Heinicke went undrafted out of Old Dominion, and wasn’t on an NFL roster for two years until Washington signed him to their practice squad on December 8th. He wasn’t even the starting quarterback when he played for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL earlier this year.

“To have two separate game plans, you’re asking for way too much of your team,” Rivera said. “That’s why it’s important to have quarterbacks that know your system, understand your system and have been a part of your system. I couldn’t tell you whether we want to do it or don’t want to do it,” Rivera said. “I couldn’t tell you if there’s value to doing it. I just know we’ll address it when it happens.”

It would be one hell of a story if Taylor Heinicke becomes a contributor in a NFL playoff game. It sounds like Ron Rivera is thinking that his Washington Football Team just might need his services this Saturday.
