Golf Fans Get All Sorts Of Butthurt From PGA Stars’ #BlackoutTuesday Posts On Instagram

Golf is generally regarded as a “white” sport. Lest we forget, within the last 25 years we’ve seen a golfer joke about Augusta serving “fried chicken and collard greens” in response to Tiger Woods’ Masters win:

And a quick search through our company’s photo provider Icon Sports Wire for “golf fans” to find black people becomes a defective game of Where’s Waldo? where there are no winners:

But nothing sums up the representation issues in golf quite as well as the Instagram replies above of players like Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka. A sea of blurry white faces and anonymous avatars all with a complete lack of awareness about the issues our country faces.

To his credit, Koepka acknowledged that whatever fan issue he and other players encounter for taking a stance in favor of human rights is something they’ve grown accustomed to:

And that’s what it all comes down to. People reveal their character by their willingness to stand up for what’s right today and moving forward. But they reveal it even more by how they react to someone else’s desire to defend their black friends, peers, and people they may not even encounter.

If your ego is so fragile that you can’t handle your favorite golfer chiming in with support for humanity during one of the most tumultuous moments our country will (hopefully) see in our lifetimes, it may be time to take a look in the mirror. Your short game isn’t the only thing that you desperately need to work on.
