Ex-Bama WR Christion Jones Fired From The CFL For Homophobic Tweets, Says It’s Racist To Get Mad Because He’s Black

B/R – The CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos released kick return specialist Christion Jones over homophobic tweets he posted last week.

“We stand with the LGBTQ2+ community and firmly condemn the language used by Christion Jones. There is no place for such commentary on our team,” the Eskimos said in a statement announcing Jones’ release.

Jones played college football at Alabama and briefly spent time with the Miami Dolphins in 2015 and 2016 before joining the CFL. He played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2017 to 2019 before being traded to Edmonton last August.

In 33 career games played, Jones has made eight receptions for 49 yards. He has added three punt returns for touchdowns.

Jones also sent some mixed messages, swearing he’d never apologize … only to apologize once news of his release came out:

A whirlwind 16 hours to be sure. I’m genuinely not sure if Christion Jones was making a point about how a Black man gets treated for vocalizing an uncomfortable view for others. I’m equally unsure if he even cares about playing in a Canadian Football League that may not even have games this season.

But these takes are going to be tough ones for people, especially employers in sports, to swallow in this cancel-heavy time of 2020. Christion Jones dropping anti-gay remarks during Pride month also seems like a particularly rough time to do it, though I’m pretty confident these wouldn’t fly on July 10 either.

Either way, it seems unlikely that we’ll see Christion Jones on any sort of football roster any time soon. He thought he had the perfect mouse trap for being homophobic and, instead, he’s now going to lose all his access to wide football fields and poutine. While we should generally always be concerned about color, Christion Jones may have wanted to be more mindful of the colors in this always helpful graph:
