Conor McGregor Lobbying For A May Trilogy With Dustin Poirier After Getting Knocked Out

Dustin Poirier shocked the MMA world this weekend with a second round TKO win over the heavily favored Conor McGregor. It was the second time the two fighters have met in the octagon, with the first matchup occurring in 2014, when they were featherweights. McGregor won that fight, and now hopes to get a third bout with Dustin Poirier.

Here’s what McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh had to say about a potential trilogy fight.

“He’s already harassing everybody to get the rematch,” Kavanagh told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “We would love the rematch. I doubt that Dustin is against that.

“If we could get the rematch before the summer, that will be amazing. If it’s not to be, well, then I guess I don’t really know. Maybe he drifts off into boxing.”

Kavanaugh went on to say that May would be a realistic month for the rematch.

“Dustin v. Conor 3 for the belt, in May or something like that; wouldn’t that be amazing?” Kavanagh said. “We’re 1-1. We gave him the rematch after the first win, and I hope he returns the sentiment.”

Many fans (myself included) were hoping to see Conor McGregor take care of Poirier, which would have potentially set up a monster rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov. That won’t happen now. Conor McGregor appears to have lost a step, and we’ll see if he can ever return to elite status in MMA.

A bounce back win against Dustin Poirier would be a nice start.
