Dusty Baker’s Reasoning For Why Fans Should Leave The Astros Alone Is Laughable

The Houstons Astros got left off the hook by a global pandemic last year. After their sign-stealing scandal dominated headlines in 2019, fans weren’t allowed in stadiums to torment them for cheating during last season. Sure enough, when fans were welcomed back this past weekend, they remembered the Astros cheating scandal just fine.

After the Angels fans went after the Astros, Houston manager Dusty Baker had a message for the unruly fans. He thinks they need to stop.

“You can tell the amount of hostility and the amount of hatred in the stands,” Baker said on a Zoom call. “How many in the stands have never done anything wrong in their life? We paid the price for it. How many people have not cheated on a test or whatever at some point in time? It’s easy if you live in glass houses but I don’t think anybody lives in glass houses. I think sometimes we need to look at ourselves before we spew hate on somebody else.

“It’s a sad situation for America to me. When you hear things, what are the kids supposed to think in the stands? And some of them are kids. They’re following their parents. It’s sad, to me. People make mistakes and we’ve paid for ours and I wish they’d leave it alone.”

Dusty Baker is so off the mark here it’s incredible.

First of all, I think me peaking over the shoulder of the smart kid in my sophomore year science class is a little bit different than implementing an elaborate scheme to know which pitches are coming next en route to several years of dominating the MLB.

Also, Dusty playing the victim card is laughable. Fans heckle. Sometimes fans get crude when they heckle. This is nothing new. Don’t make this about kids in the stands, or try to turn this into a big issue we’re facing in America today. This is about your Houston Astros, and this is about cheating.

Get used to it, Dusty. You’re going to be hearing some things every single time you go another ballpark this year.
