Chicago Cubs Reportedly Interested In An Anthony Rizzo Reunion

Could first baseman Anthony Rizzo be returning to the North Side of Chicago?

After bearing through the Chicago Cubs’ long rebuild, Rizzo was the captain and main fan-favorite of the team that broke the 108-year curse in 2016. When the Cubs tore down their core at the Trade Deadline last season, Rizzo moved to the Yankees.

But according to a report, Anthony Rizzo is going to garner some interest from the Cubs whenever the MLB lockout ends.

Per MLB Insider Bruce Levine’s latest report:

“Free agency will happen quickly, and teams will have to be ready to act. In the case of the Cubs, they could look to bring back a familiar face.

The Cubs have had internal conversations about offering 32-year-old first baseman Anthony Rizzo a new contract when free agency begins, sources said.”

Anthony Rizzo is reaching the twilight of his career at 32-years-old. But if his price tag were to drop, it would make a lot of sense for the Cubs to bring him back given their need for a first baseman, contact hitter, and lefty power bat.

When Rizzo left the Cubs last year, he opened up about some animosity he had towards the front office leaking negotiation details when the two sides were gauging a potential extension during the previous offseason.

“I’m kind of confused on why,” Rizzo said via The Chicago Tribune. “Why say that? Sounds like a bad breakup and the person saying they’re fine when they’re not fine.

“Listen, when it comes to the guys on or team and what we did — Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, MVPs, Rookie of the Years, good people — those things cost money. I know it comes down to a business, and when you want your cake and you want to eat it too, that’s kind of how it seemed.”

Anthony Rizzo certainly had a love affair with Cubs fans and the city of Chicago. And it would be a great story if he were to return to the place where he remains so beloved.
