California Passes a New Law After Leaked Photos Found of the Kobe Bryant Helicopter Crash

California Governor Gavin Newsom approved a bill put into place after the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others.

It was reported that eight deputies were taking photos of the victims on the crash scene of the deceased victims. Vanessa Bryant recently filed a law suit against the LA County Sheriff and his department over the leaked photos.

The new measure will be put into effect on Jan. 1, and it will now be considered a misdemeanor with fines up to $1,000 for any officer found guilty of taking photos of a scene for anything other than law enforcement purposes.

This story bothers me on many different levels. I’m not sure how this wasn’t a law to begin with. Also, wouldn’t common sense prevail in instances like this? How does it take a high-profile case to determine that you probably shouldn’t snap pictures of deceased victims?

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at the time that it was against the department’s rules to take photos of crime scenes, but that rule didn’t apply to accident scenes. He also said that he ordered the photos to be deleted shortly after they were taken.

I think the officers found sharing these photos should have been fired on the spot. What kind of sick person shares photos recently deceased victims? I hope Vanessa Bryant gets a fat pay day for this. I also hope that no other family ever has to go through the trauma of finding out that pictures of their deceased loved ones are circling around.
