Sunday’s Euro 2020 Round of 16 tie between Portugal and Belgium will be a very special game for none other than Yannick Carrasco. A very emotional outing.

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, or rather Yannick Carrasco long decided to ditch his father’s name Ferreira having left him in the care of his mother at a very young age, and after pledging nationality to his country of birth Portugal, he squares up against his father’s on Sunday. What an interesting twist.
But Carrasco doesn’t in any way feel sorry for what he did, and even wants to get one over by beating them tomorrow. “I don’t feel Portuguese. I was made in Genk and I want to win this Euros”, he said.
“When you’re a kid you don’t notice that your father isn’t there, but that doesn’t matter. My mother did the work of both of them. Everything that I am, I owe to her.”
With the match coming up in Seville where his mother hails from, Carrasco is already convinced this game won’t be any more special than it already is.
“I still have family in Seville, but my close relatives are in Belgium. The match against Portugal is special in itself, but not because of my private life.”
So, if Carrasco steps onto the La Cartuja turf on Sunday, be sure he will be giving it his best.
