Angels Manager Joe Maddon Throws Shade At Mike Trout For Being A Family Man

Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout reported that he still does not feel comfortable with the shortened MLB season. Trout is expecting his first child with his wife Jessica this August and is concerned about the health and safety of his family. Most people respect the three-time AL MVP for being mindful of his family. New manager Joe Maddon has some different feelings.

Joe Maddon is respected as one of the most progressive managers in the MLB, but this statement has many questioning his character. Maddon’s words might be getting taken out of context, but I see where people are coming from. This doesn’t bode well for Maddon’s first season as the Angels manager. That being said, he is no stranger to being misunderstood.

Maddon led the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908 in 2016. His tenure with the Cubs was the organization’s most successful half-decade in over a century. You wouldn’t expect that to result in firing, but that was how the cookie crumbled. Maddon recently opened up on feelings about his departure from Chicago.

“There was just, you can say, philosophical differences,” Maddon said, referencing his relationship with Theo Epstein. “But he and I are still good friends. And I like the man a lot. It was just time for him to get someone else and time for me to work somewhere else. That’s all. A five-year shelf life in Chicago is almost equivalent to five to 10 somewhere else. At the end of the day, man, there’s nothing to lament there. That was the most successful five years that the Cubs have ever had.”

Getting canned by the Cubs ultimately reacquainted Maddon with the Angels. Former Angels manager will take back the reins in southern California this season, but not without some skepticism. His statement concerning players opting out has not gone over well around the league, especially with Angels fans. Let’s hope Trout doesn’t feel slighted by it the way some fans seem to feel he was. Trout is only 28 years old and continues to be a perennial All-Star for the Angels. If he were to somehow fall off a cliff with Maddon at the helm it is safe to say that would end Maddon’s career as an MLB manager.

It’s still uncertain if the 60 game season will actually pan out. More players like Trout are voicing concerns and COVID cases continue to spike in many states. It may not mean anything but to me the official cancellation of the 2020 MLB All-Star game is not a good sign. The plan for the 2020 MLB season may still come to fruition, but I don’t blame Trout for not wanting to be a part of it.
