Steelers Coach Makes Surprising Admission About Mason Rudolph’s QB1 Chances

Does Mason Rudolph really have a chance of winning the Steelers quarterback job?

For a while now, the general consensus surrounding Pittsburgh’s quarterback competition is that it’s basically a two horse race between Mitchell Trubisky and rookie Kenny Pickett. But perhaps the Steelers are giving Rudolph more of a chance than we previously thought.

According OC Matt Canada, Rudolph has a “great chance” to win the job.

“Mason’s getting the second reps right now, almost equal to, maybe slightly less than Mitch,” Canada said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s being given a very fair shot. To this point in camp, it might have been exactly equal. Mason has made a lot of plays at times, he’s played very well at times for us. He’s got a great shot at it. He’s being treated that way. His history with our plays, with our system, is a positive for him,”

To this point, Mitchell Trubisky has taken most of the reps in Training Camp, and has been considered the favorite to start for the Steelers Week One, even with fans clamoring for Kenny Pickett.

Still, it’s clear that Pickett is the QB of the future in Pittsburgh, and with he way these things usually go, we’ll likely see him get some game action at some point this season.

Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph have both been heavily ridiculed in the past, but perhaps the Steelers competition is a chance for both to prove the haters wrong.
