Sam Darnold Injury News: Adam Schefter Gives Update on Panthers QB After He Was Carted Off During Preseason Game

It hasn’t been the best week to be Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold.

After it was announced that he has lost the team’s quarterback competition to newcomer, Baker Mayfield, Darnold suffered from some bad luck on Friday night.

While getting his reps in during the preseason game against the Bills, Darnold went down with an apparent leg injury. He was then carted off the field.

Late Friday night, ESPN insider Adam Schefter revealed that Sam Darnold was dealing with a high ankle sprain. He’ll undergo further testing on Saturday to determine how long the recover process will take.

The Panthers had originally planned to cary three quarterbacks — with Darnold, Mayfield and rookie Matt Corral. But after Corral suffered an injury, the QB room now appears to lack any depth for the time being.

Still, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule isn’t going to rule out a quick recovery process for Darnold.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” Rhule said to ESPN. “Sam’s a tough kid. He usually comes back really quickly. I’d say nothing’s off the table.”

After Rhule announced Baker Mayfield as the starting QB, Darnold admitted that the situation ‘sucks’. But he also committed to being the consummate teammate while taking on the backup role.

“We were fighting for the starting job,” Darnold said. “Every day was our game day out there during camp, especially as we got into these last couple weeks . . . Obviously, it didn’t go my way. Coach named Baker the starter. My mindset is, it is what it is. For me, right now, I’m gonna do everything I can to support Baker and get him ready to play a game.”
