Trey Sermon Released: Details Emerge From 49ers Decision to Part Ways With Former Third Round Pick

It was most definitely a forgettable San Francisco 49ers career for highly-touted running back Trey Sermon.

After falling to the Niners in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Sermon never could find his footing in the Niners backfield. And today, the team announced they were waiving the Ohio State product to make room for former Cleveland Browns’ guard Blake Hance on their roster.

According to 49ers writer Rob Lowder, the Niners saw more special teams potential in undrafted free agent Jordan Mason over the preseason.

“The #49ers’ 2021 third-round pick, RB Trey Sermon, has been waived to make room for offensive lineman Blake Hance, who the team claimed this morning. Sermon was beaten out for a roster spot by undrafted rookie Jordan Mason, who had a strong training camp and preseason,” Lowder tweeted out after the Sermon news went official.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, especially given the high praise 49ers general manager John Lynch had for Trey Sermon earlier in the offseason.

“He worked incredibly hard and had a tremendous offseason,” Lynch said, per The Athletic’s David Lombardi. “Hasn’t showed up in the games, but throughout training camp [he] has been one of our best players.”

According to reports, the 49ers are interested in bringing Trey Sermon back not heir practice squad. But given where he was graded ahead of the 2021 draft, it’s hard to imagine another team won’t take a chance on the running back and pick him up on waivers.
