The Buffalo Bills made news this week when it was revealed the owners’ plans to get around a billion dollars in public subsidies for a new stadium.
Interestingly enough, another team may just be trying to get a new stadium. An interesting news item in Sports Business Journal had Kansas City Chiefs president Mark Donovan talking about getting a new stadium, and apparently they’re playing hard ball already.
“Chiefs President Mark Donovan said the team is evaluating pitches from developers to build a new stadium in Kansas, across the state line from its historic Missouri home of Arrowhead Stadium. “Pretty consistently, we get inquiries from the state of Kansas, [that] if you’re going to make a change, what if you brought the stadium here?” Donovan said at the NFL annual meeting. “So we’re looking at that as well.”

The Chiefs’ lease at Arrowhead expires in 2031.
The Chiefs President noted it is early, but the team is also considering further renovations and the possibility of building a replacement for Arrowhead on site.
The Chiefs playing in Kansas just doesn’t feel right, but my guess is this is all about gaining leverage. If I was betting man, I’d bet all my money on the Chiefs staying in KC.
