Maya Gabeira Breaks Her Own World Record For The Largest Wave Surfed

Maya Gabeira was previously a world record surfer for shredding a wave of 68ft. She recently smashed her own world record by surfing a wave of 73.5-feet at Praia do Norte in Portugal. The record is for a woman, but Maya Gabeira surfed the largest wave of any surfer this year. This incredible moment is an absolute must-see.

Maya Gabeira’s Amazing Ride

What Maya Gabeira did is something we don’t often see in sports: a woman beating a man. But that’s exactly what Maya did with her amazing record. Beating your own record has to be a joy. Especially when your record was already a world record. But Maya absolutely smashed her record. The 73.5-foot wave she surfed on February 11 in NazarĂ©, Portugal, was the largest wave surfed by anyone this year. For sake of comparison, this year’s men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award winner, Kai Lenny, rode a 70-foot wave. Maya’s wave was not just the largest surfed by any woman, but by any surfer.

This situation highlights a rare and missed opportunity to challenge the ideology that women’s athletic ability is inferior to that of a man’s. I mean tell me, did any of you hear about this feat on SportsCenter? I know there has been quite a bit going on this year, but Maya deserves recognition as a female world-record-holding surfer. She not only crushed her own record, but she took down the male record as well. That deserves to be recognized. However, the news was hampered by an uncharacteristically long delay.

Do not let this one fly under the radar. Maya deserves to be celebrated not only as a female surfer but as a historic athlete. Join me in celebrating Maya for her outstanding athletic achievement.
