Joe Torre Reveals That Roger Clemens Cried After Infamous Bat Toss

Even though Roger Clemens was arguably the most dominant pitcher of the past few decades, the fiery right-hander will mostly be remembered for one play in particular: when he chucked a bat shard towards Mets catcher Mike Piazza after the broken bat went flying towards him in the World Series.

Now, former Yankees manager Joe Torre has a revelation about the moment involving Roger Clemens.

According to the Hall of fame skipper, Clemens was so distraught in the locker room after the World Series game, that he was seen crying by members of the clubhouse staff.

“Mel Stottlemyre, who was not coaching with us because he was in the hospital with multiple myeloma, was able to come out of the hospital and watch from my office,” Torre said.

“George Steinbrenner was in there with him. After that half inning, Roger went into the office to see Mel and Mel told me that he was crying on what he just transpired. Pitchers who have that passion, it leaks out all over the place. He (Roger) went in there and he was devastated with the result of what had happened and was crying.”

With the Mets taking on the first place Yankees at Citi Field this week, many will have visions of a subway World Series, which will undoubtedly bring memories of the Roger Clemens bat toss.

To this day, Clemens’ reputation of being a bit of a jerk, along with his alleged steroid use, have damaged his reputation. But damn, was it fun to watch him pitch back in the day.

I think it’s safe to say we’ll never see another Roger Clemens in the MLB.
