Maybe Louis Boyd isn’t getting enough hype because he is not Mason Greenwood or Bukayo Saka

Boy wonder Louis Boyd must have gone back to Healing School the morning after breaking a 45-year-old record, that is Tony Ford’s for Grimsby Town’s youngest ever debutant, and even going ahead to set another, crowing in self-delight. And rightly so.

There was something carefree yet remarkable about the 15-year-old’s contribution in Town’s EFL Trophy victory over Harrogate at the Blundell Park, and it was none other than the moment Louis Boyd, with a drop of a shoulder, crashed home an absolute pearler for his side’s second of the night. Such a goal desperately needed a crowd and would have raised the roof, but it was a shame Covid denied Grimsby fans a chance to witness first-hand the day a new hero was born at the club. Covid has already done enough harm than we all could have imagined, right?

Louis Boyd Deserves More Credit

Joe Cracknell would hardly have expected such audacious technique from a rookie, and Llory Kerry (who was more than twice his age)? With a nonchalant, cheeky feint, Louis took the ball beyond the onrushing seasoned midfielder before letting fly. And boy, what a goal that was! Thus, he became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer with that. I don’t know but if this kid’s to have a decent career in football, I’m certain he would not be sticking around Cleethorpes for far too long.

Therein lies the nub of his dilemma. Maybe it didn’t get on BBC or SkySports because he isn’t playing for Arsenal or because he is not Mason Greenwood. After all, it is one thing scoring screamers in the top-most division of a football league, and completely another doing so for a side competing in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league’s system. Whatever. Make of it whatever you wish, but never take away the quality depicted thus. There was a lad so astute in his deeds, belying his tender years, the callowness of youth notwithstanding.

Even Louis Boyd’s school principal Mrs. Dewland could not be less impressed:

“We are so proud of Louis.

“To become Grimsby Town’s youngest ever player was an achievement in itself – to score moments after coming on was a dream come true.

“We send our congratulations to him and his family and will do our very best to support him to fulfil his ambitions, as we do with all our pupils.”

‘And that is an effort he will remember for a long time’, the commentator sounded out on the night as he was mobbed by his teammates in celebration. Pretty sure he will. Whether he gets the hype or not.
