Would the Carolina Panthers turn back to Cam Newton following the injury to backup quarterback, Sam Darnold, on Friday night?
After Darnold had to be carted off the field, it was revealed that he has a high ankle sprain and will likely be out for around 4-6 weeks.
Being as the Panthers already lost third string quarterback, Matt Corral, to a season-ending injury, head coach Matt Rhule has a predicament on his hands.
Still, Rhule won’t say that he’s ready to give a call to Cam Newton.
“You guys know my feelings on Cam, but probably too early to say anything about that, Rhule said to reporters after the Panthers 21-0 win over the Bills on Friday night.
Before the Panthers made the trade for Baker Mayfield, general manager Scott Fitterer showed interest in bringing Cam Newton back into the fold.
“I think we’re still having talks,” Fitterer said during a Wednesday appearance on the “Pro Football Talk PM” podcast. “We have to see how this works out here throughout the spring. I just happened to be up at the (Kentucky) Derby last weekend, and Cam was up there. We’re texting a little bit, so the lines of communication are open. I know coach (Matt) Rhule has spoken with him. We are going to have a discussion at some point, but we’re just not quite there yet. But we’ll see how it goes. The more competition we have at that position the better.”
Last season, Cam Newton lost all five games he started for the Panthers, throwing just four touchdowns to go along with five interceptions on the year.
