Jerry Jones Continues To Gives Cryptic Answers When Asked About Mike McCarthy’s Job Security

Mike McCarthy is Jerry Jones’ “guy”, for now. But if the Cowboys don’t see a drastic change this season, the veteran head coach will likely find himself looking for work elsewhere after the season.

With Training Camp arriving this week, Jones met with the press for the first time in a while, where he was of course asked about what it would take for McCarthy to stick around for the long haul.

Here’s how he responded:

“I want to be real clear: He wouldn’t be sitting here today if I didn’t believe he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl,” Jones said of McCarthy on NFL Network Tuesday, per Ian Rapoport. “And I have choices. “

When pressed further, Jerry Jones revealed what it would take for him to consider Mike McCarthy’s season a success.

“Well, I need to win it. I need to win it, but I’ll be candid with you, there’s degrees. I want to be fair to everybody concerned,” Jones said. “We need to be in the playoffs. We need to be viable in the playoffs for it to be a successful season.”

The Cowboys have had no issue making the playoffs in the weak NFC East lately. But once they’ve made it, they’ve struggled mightily in recent years.

This time, Jerry Jones doesn’t just want Mike McCarthy to make the playoffs, but he wants them to be viewed as a legitimate contender through and through.

Regardless, it should be an interesting season in Dallas.
