Big Ben Reportedly Called His Own Offensive Plays In The Second Half Of Comeback Win Because Colts Knew What Plays Were Coming

Big Ben had enough of teams knowing what plays were coming before the ball was snapped. According to reports from NFL Network’s Mike Silver and Warren Sharp, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took matters into his own hands and went against offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner’s game plan in the second half of Sunday’s comeback victory. Why? Because the Colts were calling out the plays before they happened in the first half.

Big Ben and the Steelers were down 21-7 in a pivotal game against the Colts, and then something changed in the second half. For the first time in over a month, it looked like the Pittsburgh Steelers offense had some life. Apparently this was due to Roethlisberger taking over the play-calling. The Steelers would go on to win the game 28-24, and clinch the AFC North.

I think this whole story shows major incompetence on Fichtners part. If defenses are so all over your game plan, that your quarterback has to takeover play-calling duties, then you probably aren’t very good at your job.

Big Ben has been around the league and knows what it takes to win the big game. On Sunday, it took going against Randy Fichtner.

Maybe Ben Roethlisberger will be the first ever quarterback to also call plays? Probably not, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Steelers have a new offensive coordinator next season.
