Kyler Murray Feuds with Broadcaster Over His Recent Poor Play

Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals are in free fall, losing three in a row and four of their last five amid the mad scramble for a playoff spot. Their lone win during this stretch was the “Hail-Murray” win against Buffalo.

Following a 38-28 loss to division rival LA Rams, FOX Sports analyst and former quarterback Brock Huard spoke on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM about Kyler Murray’s struggles.

“Some of what I was hearing coming out of there is that Kyler is laser-focused on Sunday, he loves to compete, but that laser focus is not there Monday through Saturday and I think you’ve seen that show up on Sundays,” Huard said. “Everybody competes on Sunday. Everybody loves their paycheck. Everybody loves to play. But if you want to be great, you’ve got to compete on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday on the practice field like it’s the most important thing in your life and that is where I think he has the most area to grow.”

While the Arizona coaching staff has downplayed his shoulder injury, the stipulation is Murray’s injured throwing shoulder is still lingering, creating his entire style of play to change. Murray was averaging 67 rushing yards during the first nine games of the season. He scored 10 rushing touchdowns in that span. Now, over his last three contests, he has 61 rushing yards total and zero touchdowns on the ground. There is no report of a torn or separated shoulder from the medical staff.

With his rushing attack severely limited, defenses are keying in on his aerial prowess. Two of his four worst passer rating performances have come in the last two games.

Huard went further in his scathing review of Murray, explaining that the star quarterback ignores designed blocks on quarterback runs and draw plays.

  “[He] tried to scamper outside and run away from people and ran for nothing. That’s going to be on him,” Huard said. “And maybe that shoulder hurts and he’s like, ‘Screw that, I’m not running between the tackles. I’m not taking that contact. I don’t want this thing to get separated again.’ I think that’s the line he’s navigating.”

Murray defended his play when speaking to the media following Huard’s comments. “My shoulder is fine,” Murray said during a video conference call with reporters. “As far as running the ball goes, it’s pretty obvious if you watch the game if they (opposing defenses) make me hand the ball off, I have no choice but to hand the ball off. I don’t know what you want me to do. You want me to pull it and run into a defensive? Like, I don’t know. They’re making me hand the ball so that’s what I have to do.”

He later questioned Huard’s opinion of his effort in practice claiming practices are private.

Murray and the Cardinals take on the New York Giants Dec 13. Arizona is currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in with four games to go.
