With Masters week kicking off today at Augusta National, a lot of the attention is on who is not in attendance. Tiger Woods, the most prolific golfer of all-time, is still recovering from a scary single-car crash that left him hospitalized and in need of surgery on his leg.

With The Masters’ champions dinner set for Tuesday night, there is a lot of speculation on whether or not Tiger Woods could be in attendance, to at least to share in the festivities while he can’t play.
Bill Mallon, a former PGA Tour player and now the Associate Consulting Professor of Orthopaedics at Duke University sent out a whole 17-part Twitter thread on whether or not Tiger could be at Augusta with all the injuries he sustained from his crash.
It’s actually a decent time to look at the status of his recovery since Wednesday, 7 April, will be 6 weeks since his accident, which is an important landmark to orthopaedists. 2/n

Sticky means the fracture is not fully healed but it’s knitting together and can usually start to bear more stress, or more weight for lower extremity fractures. By 3 months most fractures have healed, assuming all is going well. 4/n

Tiger had an open tibia (shinbone) fracture. The main concern for those is developing an infection. If Tiger had developed an infection we would have heard about it because he would have been taken back to the operating room to clean out the infection. 6/n

Does that mean he cannot develop an infection after 6 weeks? No, but its less likely. If he was going to get an infection it would almost certainly be from the initial contamination of the wound at the time of the accident, and the infection would likely occur early. 8/n

If the only problem was his tibia, Tiger would likely be FWB about now. But he was noted to have fractures in his foot that were treated with several screws. One was a talus fracture and the other, I’ve since learned, was a Lisfranc fracture. 10/n

With a Lisfranc fracture you would not begin weight-bearing initially as there is too much stress on the bones. Same with a talus fracture – the talus being the bone at the back and top of the foot that is one of the 3 bones of the ankle joint. 12/n

If everything is healing well, and we’ve heard nothing to the contrary, Tiger should likely now be beginning to put weight on the foot and ankle, although I doubt it is FWB. He likely has been using a bent-knee rolling walker to stay NWB until now. 14/n

Wish I could be more definitive but Tiger is known for keeping things secret, especially about his injuries, which is always any patient’s prerogative. 16/n

So bottom line, I doubt Tiger is going to show up in public with a cane or a walker, so I’m going to guess we will not be seeing him at the Masters’ Champions Dinner. 17/end

At the end of the day, it is possible that we see Tiger make an appearance at Augusta this week. However, I gotta agree with Mallon that I don’t think he’d show up if he needs a cane to walk.
Let’s just hope we see Tiger Woods around the game of golf sometime in the near future. We’ll be missing him this week.
