Trevor Story Interested In Going To The Cubs In Free Agency

Colorado Rockies star shortstop is likely going to be moving on when he hits free agency this offseason, where he’s bound to be one of the most expensive players on the market.

And with the Cubs fan base dreading the possibility of a full-blown rebuild, perhaps Story would be the perfect guy to ease their pain.

Chicago obviously decided to tear down their entire roster during the Trade Deadline when they dealt Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Craig Kimbrel, etc.

But the Cubs ownership (along with president Jed Hoyer) pointed to their built up farm system as a reason why it won’t be a very long rebuild.

Does Trevor Story Fit With The Cubs?

Trevor Story and the Rockies traveled in to Wrigley Field in Chicago to face the Cubs this week, which left the shortstop wondering if it’s a place he could see himself playing next year.

The simple answer: yes. If the Cubs come calling, that is.

It’s a special place,” Story said. “I was just talking to our hitting coach, (Jeff) Salazar, about it. When you’re here, there’s something different about it. Here and New York and Boston, in those three stadiums, you just feel a different atmosphere about it. But, yeah, it certainly brings memories back to 2018. It was obviously good for my team. It was electric, man. I feel like that’s what it’s all about playing baseball ….

Trevor Story added: “From afar, it’s such a historic organization. I love playing here. The fans are great. Just coming here over the last six years, it’s a place you look forward to coming, for sure.”

There’s nothing really tying Story to the North Side of Chicago other than these comments. But it’s not outside the realm of possibility that the Cubs could make a splash or two in free agency now that they dumped some big contracts of their books.

Whether that means they go after a guy like Trevor Story remains to be seen. But with the Cubs roster currently in shambles, there’s certainly a vacancy at shortstop or third base for Story.

Like many guys hitting free agency this Winter, Story has been having a down year. Story is currently slashing .251/.327/.457 and has 16 home runs.

It’s not a lock that we’ll ever see the 2019 version of Trevor Story, when he hit .294 with 35 home runs. But he should still receive plenty of attention on the market.

And one team who just might be kicking the tires is the Chicago Cubs….
