Tony Dungy Has An Interesting Comparison For Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence has already taken the NFL by storm without even being drafted. The projected number one overall pick has signed multiple endorsements prior to draft day. Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy has offered some high praise of Trevor Lawrence. Dungy believes that Lawrence is capable of having the same impact on Jacksonville as Peyton Manning did on Indianapolis.

Tony Dungy told Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union that Manning’s quick rise among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL transformed Indianapolis from a Pacers town to a Colts town. He feels that Trevor Lawrence’s charisma has the ability to galvanize the city of Jacksonville in the same way.

“What Peyton did was turn the city from an [NBA] Indiana Pacers town into an Indianapolis Colts town,” Dungy said, via Frenette. “I think he had a great impact on his team and us as a city. That’s what those generational quarterbacks do. They lift the ability of everybody around them.

“I’ve been around Trevor a lot at Clemson. I think he has that same ability to do that for the Jaguars.”

Trevor Lawrence has already created quite the buzz in the city of Jacksonville. Jaguars fans sent the Clemson star and his wife, Marissa Mowry, wedding gifts after the two tied the knot earlier this month. Lawrence and Mowry responded by donating $20,000 to Jacksonville charities.

Tony Dungy’s comparison is an interesting one for a couple of reasons. Jacksonville doesn’t have a historic NBA team, so it’s not like Lawrence will be able to flip the fan base. It is also high praise for a quarterback that hasn’t taken a single snap in the NFL. However, like many others, Tony Dungy believes Trevor Lawrence is a generational talent.

Needless to say, the expectations for Trevor Lawrence are very high. But Tony Dungy seems to believe he can have a lasting effect on a city that has been hurting for a true franchise quarterback.
