Steelers Front Office Doesn’t Sound Too Interested In Bringing Back Ben Roethlisberger

Ben Roethlisberger will always be a legend in Pittsburgh. Big Ben has been the ultimate gamer, winning three rings over his 17-year career with the Steelers. With that being said, the writing might be on the wall for the veteran QB.

The Steelers have one of the best defenses in the NFL, some solid playmakers on offense, but Roethlisberger showed his age last year, and was exposed during the team’s playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers don’t have a clear contingency plan for Ben Roethlisberger, so it seemed like he’d be under center for the team once again next season. However, it might not be that easy. According to reports, the Steelers are hoping that Big Ben will either restructure his contract or retire.

“His options essentially boil down to two “r’s,” restructure or retire. The Steelers can save around $14 million if they can restructure his base salary and roster bonus into a signing bonus, spread over multiple years,” Steelers insider Brooke Pryor said during an appearance on Sportscenter.

“Roethlisberger has signaled that he’s willing to take a pay cut, but retirement could still be on the table – especially considering longtime teammate and friend Maurkice Pouncey called it a career.”

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert didn’t exactly give a ringing endorsement of Ben Roethlisberger when asked about his future with the team.

“As we sit here today, Ben is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert said, via Pryor of ESPN. “He reiterated to us that he wants to continue to play. We told him we have to look at this current situation.”

When a GM says things like, “as we sit here today” or “as of right now”, it normally means they aren’t too invested in the guy. Don’t be surprised if Ben Roethlisberger gets forced into retirement by the team he’s given his heart and soul for.
