Ryan Fitzpatrick Admits To Sending His Worst Text Ever To Alex Smith

We have all sent text messages that we later regret. During a recent appearance on the ‘Green Light with Chris Long’ podcast, Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick revealed the worst text message he’s ever sent. The best part of this story, however, is that the text message went to Alex Smith, who he is replacing as Washington’s quarterback. After he heard that Smith suffered a horrific injury, Fitzpatrick reached out to him to send some words of encouragement. Unfortunately, the delivery of the message fell a bit short, to say the least.

“The single worst text I’ve ever sent out went to Alex,” Fitzpatrick said. “I said ‘Hey, Alex. Just wanted to let you know they’ll fix you up and you’ll feel as good as new. I’m out here and I don’t feel any pain from my injury three years later.’ And I sent it and felt good about it, and he then said ‘Well, mine might be a little more complicated.’ 17 surgeries later and the story of what he had to overcome, I felt like the biggest a**hole ever.”

Looking back on the text in hindsight, Fitzpatrick added that he thought that what Alex Smith was able to accomplish last year was incredible. You can tell in Fitzpatrick’s voice that he meant no ill will with the text and genuinely felt bad when he realized the severity of the injury Alex Smith was dealing with.
It says a lot about the type of guy that Alex Smith is that he even responded to that kind of message. Fortunately, Alex Smith was able to beat the odds and was able to return to the field. The fact that he was able to do so is nothing short of a miracle. Ryan Fitzpatrick will probably think twice about his word choice when texting fellow players regarding an injury. As awful as the text was, there seems to be no bad blood between the two. Fitzpatrick certainly learned a valuable lesson with that one.
