Ole Miss Freshman TE DaMarcus Thomas Airlifted To Hospital After Tragic Injury

Ole Miss Freshman Tight End DaMarcus Thomas had to be helicoptered to a hospital on Monday morning after suffering an injury in practice. The injury left him motionless and without feeling anywhere in his body for several minutes, Coach Lane Kiffin told media on Monday. Kiffin said he’s never seen an injury like this in his lifetime in football.

Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin said Thomas ultimately did regain some movement and feeling before he was helicoptered away. It’s still a tragic injury, but the fact that he did stabilize a bit was definitely a positive sign. “Obviously hopefully this is some severe stinger,” Kiffin said. “I did ask them, the medical staff. They said that that does happen sometimes. I’m just praying that that’s somehow what it is.” Ole Miss immediately ended their practice after the injury and the entire team and coaching staff waited outside with Thomas until an ambulance arrived.

Thomas has played in five of Ole Miss’ six games this season but has yet to record a statistic. Ole Miss sits at just 2-4 on the season, but they are coming off a win against Vanderbilt this past weekend.

Ole Miss Running back Jerrion Ealy spoke out on how the injury to Thomas transpired. “The injury happened on a “normal football play” that combined with a “freak accident.” Watching the aftermath of the injury unfold left Ealy speechless.

“We’re all just in shock,” Ealy said. I can’t really say too much about it because it’s just shocking. It’s one of those freak accidents that happen on a football field that you only hear about and you never see. It’s kind of eye-opening.”

The injury to Damarcus Thomas is tragic and will be monitored by the Ole Miss football program moving forward. More information on Thomas’ status will be released as it becomes available.
