Odell Beckham may be regretting choosing bitcoin for his salary.
When OBJ signed on the dotted line with Rams, he opted to take his entire salary into Bitcoin. When he did this, Bitcoin was in the midst of breaking new all-time highs, and was worth $64,000 per coin. This seemed like it could be a good investment, however, a local top came quickly and ultimately shattered the price of Bitcoin.
As reported by Darren Rovell, OBJ’s entire salary is now worth $413K as opposed to $750K. Not to mention, once you factor in taxes, he has only made around $35K, which is enough money for just one Bitcoin.
See below:
The amount of people applauding players changing their salary into Bitcoin as if they were heroes has been comical.

People should understand that these celebrities are often getting paid–REAL MONEY–to promote Bitcoin by making these announcements. And usually cash out as quickly as possible. All the while laughing at their fans who were influenced to be the lowest tier of the Ponzi scheme. https://t.co/5K13aR2cPI

I’m currently *barely* making more than OBJ this year thanks to this blunder.

Rovell and another reporter did argue over his take on OBJ’s salary:
I know this fits your narrative, but it's simply not true.
1. The deal was announced on Nov 22nd, not Nov 12th.
2. NFL players get paid weekly, not 100% upfront.
3. Cash App paid him 7-figures in marketing money — that's more than his entire contract with the Rams.
— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) January 23, 2022
1. The deal was done on the 12th.
2. The aggregate payment has been completed. It doesn’t matter when he got paid.
3. There’s no accepting of any responsibility here. Like you calling everyone a “legend” for doing anything in Bitcoin.
— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) January 23, 2022
Why? Why does it deserve to have that expectation. I’ll hang up and listen. And previous short history is not eligible as an answer.
— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) January 23, 2022
OBJ isn’t exactly hurting for money, so he can hang on to the bitcoin for several years until he’s ready to cash out.
But we’ll see if athletes continue to get paid in Bitcoin with its current volatility.
The juice might not be worth the squeeze.
