NFL Insider Believes Tom Brady Will Join 49ers Next season

After Tom Brady retired earlier in the offseason, he made comments that led many to believe that he might consider coming out of retirement if the right situation arose.

“You know, I’m just gonna take things as they come,” Brady said. “I think that’s the best way to put it and I don’t think anything, you know, you never say never. At the same time I know that I’m very, I feel very good about my decision. I don’t know how I’ll feel six months from now, [inaudible] change, it most likely won’t. But I try to make the best possible decision I can in the moment, which I did this last week. And, again, I think it’s not looking to reverse course, I’m definitely not looking to do that. But in the same time I think you have to be realistic that you never know what challenges there are gonna be in life. Again, I loved playing. I’m looking forward to doing things other than playing.”

On Monday, PFT’s Mike Florio wrote a column on his belief that Tom Brady will end up on the San Francisco 49ers by the start of the 2022 season.

Per the article:

“Jimmy Garoppolo presided over a blown 10-point, fourth-quarter lead in the Super Bowl two years ago. He then presided over a blown 10-point, fourth-quarter lead in the NFC Championship 22 days ago. Rookie Trey Lance may or may not be ready to.

So why not spend a year with Brady? The 49ers were his first choice when he became a free agent in 2020, but the 49ers said, “No thanks.” They surely regret it. Now, they may have a chance to rectify it.”

Tom Brady hasn’t given us any real indication that he intends to take calls about joining a team next season. But a move to the Niners would make some sense.

He grew up a Niners fan, the team has basically already committed to trading 2021 starter Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, and Trey Lance’s tenure can start in 2023 if that means bringing the GOAT in to a Super Bowl contending team.

But with all that being the case, I still think Tom Brady will remain retired next season. Too many things would have to fall into place for him to end up in San Francisco, including the team working out a trade with the Bucs for his playing rights.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has given every indication that he’s comfortable turning the team over to Trey Lance for next season, and I doubt that’ll change during the offseason.
