MLB Announces Punishment For Mickey Callaway After Sexual Harassment Investigation

Former Mets manager and Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway has been put on leave from his current job as the L.A. Angels pitching coach after a few different women journalists accused Callaway of sexual harassment and inappropriate text messages.

According to a report by The Athletic, Callaway “just preyed on women,” one accuser said. Callaway’s behavior was “the worst-kept secret in sports,” said another.

On Wednesday, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred sent out a statement on his decision to suspend Mickey Callaway through the 2022 season.

“My office has completed its investigation into allegations of sexual harassment by Mickey Callaway,” Manfred said. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Callaway violated MLB’s policies, and that placement on the Ineligible List is warranted. We want to thank the many people who cooperated with our Department of Investigations (DOI) in their work, which spanned Mr. Callaway’s positions with three different Clubs. The Clubs that employed Mr. Callaway each fully cooperated with DOI, including providing emails and assisting with identifying key witnesses. Harassment has no place within Major League Baseball, and we are committed to providing an appropriate work environment for all those involved in our game.”

After the punishment was handed down, the Angels officially fired Mickey Callaway.

At the end of the 2022 season, Mickey Callaway will have to apply to the league for his re-instatement. At any rate, it would be hard to foresee a team taking on the burden of hiring the former Mets manager.

Mickey Callaway clearly used his position of power to do some horrible things and make people feel uncomfortable. Hopefully he uses this time away from the game to get some counseling.
