Mitchell Trubisky Throws Subtle Shade At Matt Nagy When Speaking On His Year In Buffalo

It’s safe to say Mitchell Trubisky liked the way things operated in Buffalo WAY better than his days with Matt Nagy in Chicago.

After being outed in Chicago following the 2020 season, Trubisky joined Brian Daboll’s offense as Josh Allen’s backup last season. And when speaking on his desire to be a starter in the NFL again, Trubisky got candid about how Buffalo was able to open his eyes about what makes a successful quarterback.

“I’m in a confident space right now,” Trubisky said recently, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

After being the QB1 for the better part of three seasons with Matt Nagy’s Chicago bears, Mitchell Trubisky was relegated to mop up duty with Buffalo — completing just 6-8 passes on the season. He also added a rushing touchdown during the season.

Despite being scarcely used, Trubisky thinks he’s much better off after his year with the Bills, being as he only knowing how things operated in Chicago prior to taking the backup role.

“Going to Buffalo really opened my eyes,” Trubisky said. “After being in Chicago for four years, there was only one way I knew how to do things. [Being] in Buffalo and [having] a different way of doing things, you learn what’s possible. It helped me get back to instinctual football and using my talents rather than overthinking.”

Mitchell Trubisky was drafted second overall by the Chicago bears in 2017 after being at UNC  for a couple years. He never really got the chance to play with top offensive minds in college, or an NFL-type system.

With this being the case, Trubisky likely put his faith in Matt Nagy to show him the ropes. And he was given an incompetent offense for a few years instead. Whether he meant to or not, Trubisky couldn’t help but acknowledge how much more of a legitimate operation was ran in Buffalo than under Nagy, and you can’t really blame the guy for voicing that realization when trying to land another starting gig.

I think we’ll see Mitchell Trubisky back as a QB1 in the league again at some point. And it’ll be interesting to see what he can do without Matt Nagy tying him down.
