Mets New Owner Steve Cohen Takes a Playful Shot at A-Rod, J-Lo

Newly minted New York Mets owner Steve Cohen picked up his first win since taking over the team, saying all the right things during his introductory press conference Tuesday with team president Sandy Alderson. Some highlights below:

“New York fans have high expectations, and I want to exceed them.”

“I don’t want to just get into the playoffs. I want to win a championship.”

“You build champions, you don’t buy them.”

He also had some fun at the expense of A-Rod and J-Lo, which was most definitely the best part of his introductory speech.

Then the new Mets owner jokingly offered proof, when he was asked about the other bidders for the franchise.

“Who are the other bidders? I don’t remember,” Cohen said with a grin Tuesday in his introductory press conference.

The other bidders, of course, included a group led by Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez. Cohen won out in the end, purchasing the club for $2.4 billion and gaining MLB approval by getting 26 of 30 votes from other owners. One of the no votes reportedly belonged to Jerry Reinsdorf, who is close with Rodriguez.

Forbes reports Cohen is worth $14.5 billion, making the Mets new owner the richest in Major League Baseball. Since he didn’t take control of the club until this month, he’s also the only owner who was not financially impacted by the coronavirus-shorted 60-game regular season.

The Mets have no excuses moving forward.
