Mark Cuban Weighs in on NBA Top Shot Craze

NBA Top Shot is poppin’ right now. So What is NBA Top Shot you ask? Well, to put it simply, it’s a blockchain-based platform that allows people to buy and sell number versions of video player highlights called “Moments,” according to Forbes. It was developed by Vancouver-based Dapper Labs, who created the CryptoKitties game.  Top Shot did more than $37 million in sales over a 24-hour period Monday, according to Cryptoslam.

So it’s real, and it’s the hottest thing in the NBA right now.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is not only a billionaire, but he’s also the main Shark on Shark Tank, so how does he feel about the latest digital craze?

“Some people might complain that I can get the same video on the internet anywhere anytime and watch it,” Cuban wrote in his blog. “Well, guess what, I can get the same picture on any traditional, physical card on the internet and print it out, and that doesn’t change the value of the card.” Cuban notes that when collecting traditional sports cards or stamps, the owner must worry about storing and protecting their collection. Should they choose to sell the items, shipping the stamps or cards entails considerable risks. With TopShot Moments, Cuban argues, “you have all the fun, none of those risks, and the value is still set by the same laws of supply and demand.”

Cuban owns about 50 moments and spent about $600 total. He bought the moments when they were going for $2 and $3, including one of star Mavericks point guard Luka Doncic.

According to Bleacher Report, Dapper Labs is developing a mobile game, which will let Moments function like the in-game purchases you can unlock in NBA 2K. And, according to ESPN, the company has also started talks with retired NBA players to secure rights to historic highlights.

Looks like Top Shot is here to stay. The money train is rolling. . .
