Racism in America is still as overt as it has ever been. If you don’t believe that then you are simply in denial. However, at West Jones High School in Jones County, Mississippi, racism isn’t taken seriously. A student sent private text messages including racist remarks. The messages were later leaked on Instagram, sparking protests from other students. But not in the way you might expect.

Mississippi High School White Teachers and Students Under Investigation for Saying #BlackLivesMatters Are Just Worthless N*ggers While Wearing Trump Masks and Flying Trump Flags in Parking Lot (Racists Snaps, IG & Texts) https://t.co/20YYaJ05nK pic.twitter.com/RQMlt5Xwm3

According to Black Lives Matter Mississippi, students wearing Black Lives Matter clothing were forced to change. Superintendent Tommy Parker made a statement to WDAM which seemed as if he could care less. I’m not sure if that is for better or for worse. Statements concerning racism are often lazy and dismissive when coming from the mouths of white males.
“A student at West Jones High School had a private message that was made public by another student via social media. The post contained some very derogatory and racially insensitive language and contained some very inappropriate statements in regard to the recent riots across our nation. The post caused some concerns for the school administration, but students attended classes today without incident. The Jones County School District has strict policies against discrimination and harassment in any form. This incident remains under investigation.” -BSO
The statement claims that the incident is still under investigation, but let’s be honest, this is the Mississippi. I am not too optimistic about the outcome. When there is a white man in charge, things like this pretty much boil over with virtually no consequences. At least within the school. And when it comes to the law, it’s not much better. Especially in the South, like Mississippi.
I can only hope that at my former high school a matter like this would be handled with proper consequences. People have gotten punished for much less. But I have to say I don’t know. I grew up pretty far removed from Mississippi, but it was a small, conservative town. At the end of the day, it’s not much different. However, this situation is not about me or my former high school. This is about West Jones High School in Mississippi.
If the school district has strict policies on discrimination, the incident wouldn’t remain under investigation, it would be finished. Seven parents took to WDAM to bring awareness. Yet, the parent of the racist person has yet to say anything for their child’s behavior. This is Mississippi. This is America. Racism is still alive and well. If you don’t think so, wake up.
