KAT Speaks Out About Family Tragedy After Win

Minnesota overtook a 14-point Detroit lead to win their season debut 111-101. After the game, Minnesota center Karl Anthony Towns dedicated the win to his late mother.

KAT’s mother, Jacqueline, passed away April 13 due to complications from COVID-19.

“It meant a lot. Selfishly for me, it meant a lot,” Towns said to the media after the game. “It was heavy, I’m just happy I got this for her. I told her I wanted to get her this win and get her this ball, so I’m just happy that I was able to get it done.”

He then discussed how he is a changed man from this past year. “That Karl died on April 13. He ain’t coming back,” he said. “That man you’re talking about from April 13 or before, I don’t know him. He ain’t there.”

He finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

During the offseason, Towns released a video called “The Toughest Year of My Life.” He opened up about the loss of his mother alongside six additional family members due to contracting COVID-19.

The Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Utah Jazz Dec 26 as the franchise looks to return to the playoffs since its last appearance in 2017.
