Jon Gruden Went With The Classic ‘I’m Not An Idiot’ Line To Clap Back At Critics

The ol’ “I’m not an idiot” line by a head coach of a sports team is always sure to get a reaction out of the fans. And the latest head coach to pull the line out was Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden.

Previously, Gruden has admitted that he’s an old-school mind who doesn’t use too many analytics when he’s making his game plans. But after some backlash, Gruden now claims that he uses all the information at his disposal because he’s ‘not an idiot’.

“There’s reports out there that I don’t listen to that stuff,” Gruden said of utilizing technology and analytics at practice. “I sarcastically say that just to make some of my adversaries happy. I’m not an idiot if you know what I mean. We practice in the Mojave Desert here.
We do gather all kinds of information. We have some of the best trainers and doctors and people here that you can imagine. We’re gonna be real careful and smart, and you’re darn right we listen to that stuff.”

When Jon Gruden first took the job with the Raiders, he vowed to throw analytics out the window, and bring a ‘1998’ vibe back to the team.

“Man, I’m trying to throw back the game to 1998,” he said at the time via Bleacher Report.”I still think doing things the old-fashioned way [is the right way.]”

In Jon Gruden’s first three years at the helm for the Raiders, the team has not completed a season with over a .500 winning percentage. In Gruden’s defense, most of that is because of consistently having a bottom tier defensive unit.

But nonetheless, Jon Gruden is going to have to do some more winning in 2021, and maybe a little more analytics use can do his team some good.
