Giants GM Joe Schoen Willing To Call Daniel Jones QB1 “Right Now”

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been playing for a lot of different coaching schemes with a lot of different teammates since he was deemed the successor for Eli Manning.

Even though Jones hasn’t been particularly impressive in his short tenure, it appears as though the team is expected to give him a shot in Brian Daboll’s offense this season.

When asked about Daniel Jones recently, newly-hired general manager Joe Schoen admitted that the quarterback was who the team was planning on rolling with “right now”.

Earlier in the offseason, Giants owner John Mara was also asked what his thoughts on Daniel Jones were going into next season. And he certainly sounded like he wasn’t prepared to go waste another first round draft pick on a quarterback just yet.

“We do feel Daniel can play. We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up,” he said last month.

Sure, we’ve heard plenty of coaches and general managers go back on their word when deeming someone the QB1 “right now” in previous years. Specifically, Kliff Kingsbury gave Josh Rosen a lot of confidence before going out and selecting Kyler Murray in the same offseason. But this feels different to me.

The Giants have a terrible cap space situation at the moment to go along with a damaged roster and lack of great draft picks.

The best course of action for Joe Schoen and the Giants appears to be to give Daniel Jones one last chance to prove himself, this time in a competent system.

We’ll see what they ultimately decide.
