Eugene Chung Told That He Was “Not The Right Minority” In Job Interview

The NFL might be doing some digging this week to find out which team told former player and assistant coach Eugene Chung that he was “not the right minority” in an NFL coaching job interview.

In a recent interview with the Boston Globe Chung said that he was told that he “was not a minority.” Chung who was very surprised with this statement replied replied by saying “I was like, ‘Wait a minute. The last time I checked, when I looked in the mirror and brushed my teeth, I was a minority,’ ” he said. “So I was like, ‘What do you mean I’m not a minority?’ .”

The interview with the Boston Globe goes on to say that the interviewer responded, “You are not the right minority we’re looking for.”

Chung stated in the interview that “I was always proud of my heritage, being Asian and being Korean. Always proud. Never ashamed. Not one day of my life.”

Chung was selected 13th overall in the 1992 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He became the first Asian-American to get drafted in the first round. In the interview with the Boston Globe Chung recalled hearing racial slurs in school and on the field.

Chung did not identify the team that interviewed him.

This is not a good look for the NFL to have on their resume considering the recent criticism of diversity in coaching positions.
