Duke University Holds Protest On Campus To Fight Social Injustice In Light Of The Jacob Blake Shooting

Duke University men’s basketball Director of Operations, spoke with WRAL’s Gerald Owens about Thursday’s protest at Duke University, which included coach Mike Krzyzewski. Smith says that the protest was not just about social injustice, but also to “empower our student-athletes”. We all know what happened to Jacob Blake. These incidents are not news anymore. The question is: when are they going to stop?

I am no fan of the Duke Blue Devils, however, I am a fan of Coach K., fighting injustices and supporting student-athletes. A question I wish I knew the answer to, how do we, as a nation, put an end to this? These times are not unprecedented. We have seen this over and over again. Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake, and many more. When will it stop? I’m sure Duke is not the only school to hold a protest, but they definitely got my attention as a Duke hater.

Say their names. Be an antiracist. Fight social injustices and put an end to shooting people, of all races. Gun violence is just as big an issue as social injustice. We need to come together and put an end to it. This is a group effort; there is no way to fight social injustice as individuals. All of us have to react to make an impact. It is more than just talk. It is intentional actions and conversations. Let’s do it now. Not tomorrow. Today. Good for Duke University. Now it’s our turn.
