Delonte West and His Battle With Mental Illness
The Delonte West story continues to get grimmer and grimmer by the day. Mental illness is a beast and West is clearly fighting his fight against it. Unfortunately for West, right now it looks to be an uphill climb. West, 37, was previously seen living on the streets back in January of the current year. In light of that, a video went viral of him engaged in a physical altercation. In the video, you can see a disheveled West ranting on the streets, following a beat down that happened right in the middle of the road. Not a pretty sight.
Delonte West’s former Saint Joseph’s University teammate, Jameer Nelson, spoke out expressing his heartbreak regarding West’s battle with mental illness and homelessness. “I’m sick to my stomach right now seeing the videos of Delonte (West). To answer everybody that’s reaching out to me about his situation…all we can do is pray for him and his family and hope that he seeks the proper help,” Nelson wrote on social media. “Mental illness is something that a lot of people deal with and don’t even know it until sometimes it’s too late. I’m not exactly sure what is going on with Delonte West, but he knows I’m in his corner and will help him get through this,” Nelson continued to say.
Delonte West is obviously in a very poor state, both physically and mentally. As Jameer Nelson stated, it is imperative that he seeks the proper treatment if he wants to get through this. I know first hand that mental illness is a monster. I dealt with it undiagnosed for over twenty years. Regarding Delonte West, my thoughts and prayers go out to him. I hope that he finds it within himself to seek help, both from friends and family and medically.
