The Indians are out, and the Guardians are in. Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team is changing its name to Guardians, the franchise announced Friday, dropping the racially offensive name it has been known as for more than a century. So how did they come up with the Guardians name?
The name Guardians is reportedly a reference to Art Deco statues located on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge. Those statues are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.”
The MLB franchise announced the name change in a tweet Friday morning. They even brought in Tom Hanks to do some Oscar winning narration.

MLB.com reported that will happen for next season. The 2021 season is currently underway, with the Cleveland franchise in second place in the American League Central.

The Guardians name will take some time to get used to but not the worst nickname I’ve ever heard.
