Brian Flores Opens Up On Leaking Personal Texts With Bill Belichick

A huge piece of evidence in the racism lawsuit former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed against the Giants and NFL was some personal texts he received from Bill Belichick.

When Belichick meant to text Brian Daboll to congratulate him on getting the Giants gig, he mistakenly sent the message to another former assistant, Brian Flores. This led to an awkward exchange, especially given that Flores still had a follow-up interview in New York later in the week.

When speaking on why he decided to leak the Bill Belichick text, Brian Flores said he thought it was an integral piece to his lawsuit.

“To me, I thought it was specific to the lawsuit in that it confirmed a lot of things that I thought were going on — that I think a lot of Black or minority coaches think are going on,” Flores said during an interview with Brandon Marshall’s “I Am Athlete” podcast. “It kind of confirmed it for me as far as having a fair and equal opportunity to go and have an interview and show your acumen, show intelligence, show your ability to lead, show your willingness and your leadership. Oftentimes, it’s not a fair and equal playing field.”

The New York Giants immediately released a statement in denial of Brian Flores’ claims, maintaining that the Bill Belichick text did not serve as proof that they were done with their head coach hiring process.

“The allegation that the Giants’ decision had been made prior to Friday evening, January 28, is false. And to base that allegation on a text exchange with Bill Belichick in which he ultimately states that he “thinks” Brian Daboll would get the job is irresponsible. The text exchange occurred the day before Coach Daboll’s in-person interview even took place. Giants’ ownership would never hire a head coach based only on a 20-minute zoom interview, which is all that Mr. Daboll had at that point.

In addition, Mr. Belichick does not speak for and has no affiliation with the Giants. Mr. Belichick’s text exchange provides no insight into what actually transpired during our head coaching search,” the team wrote in their statement.
