Boston Radio Guys Have The Whitest Guy Takes On Cam Newton’s ‘Dappin And Supermanning’ As Patriots QB

The Felger & Mazz show has been a stalwart in Boston radio for a while now. And for as absurd as their takes on “dapping” and Cam Newton‘s celebrations may be, they likely speak for a lot of fans in the area.

I previously speculated that the fix may be in with Cam Newton’s contract serving as an easy way for the Patriots to give the starting job to Jarrett Stidham. And I still think that people treating Cam as though he’s a shoo-in to start or even be a key Patriots may be a misstep given our broken offseason.

But it does seem wild that Cam Newton is already getting the Boston media burial that so many of these guys get. When someone leaves Boston, they get hit pieces in the media. When someone comes into Boston in any of the sports, there’s always a skeptical eye as to how they’ll fit and whether they’ll “do things the right way.” Manny Ramirez vacillated from a perception of being a dolt to one of the greatest hitters of all time depending upon how he did in a given month. It feels like some coded racism and, given how all of our antennae are up for that these days (and Boston doesn’t have the greatest track record in this department in a variety of ways), I get how there may be some blowback to Felger and Mazz’s banter in the video.

And there’s some inaccuracy there too. Yeah, Tom Brady wasn’t doing cartwheels and Bill Belichick isn’t exactly a cheerleader on the sidelines. But the greater New England area loved Rob Gronkowski for years and he was all audaciousness with his spike celebration being a thing even when the NFL barely let players show emotion after a score without a penalty.

Also, out of all the celebrations you’re concerned about, Cam Newton’s Superman one sticks out? There are guys doing full on Riverdance performances with all of their teammates after a touchdown and this is what you think isn’t the Patriot Way?

Compared to all of the other things we know of Cam Newton like his outfits and absurd Instagram font, that’s easily one of the most subdued things he does.

Either way, we all know the diehard Patriots fans and the local pink hat supporters will be pantomiming a torn open shirt if Cam starts and wins games. Boston may be predictably stodgy, like many older white media dudes are — including the now mostly beloved Joe Buck — when it comes to Black athlete expression. But they’re equally predictable when it comes to assigning way much personal value to a sports team winning games. If Cam wins, they’ll deify him. If he loses, they’ll throw out all sorts of under the breath utterances and coded words about how he did things the wrong way. That’s Boston. That’s probably also just sports.

Here’s hoping Cam drops some “daps” right in their faces in the coming months and gets paid next offseason.
