Bobby Bonilla Fans Are Celebrating The Life of Bernie Madoff

One of the biggest scam artists of all -time, Bernie Madoff, passed away earlier today in federal prison.

While Madoff was responsible for screwing over a lot of people, he made ‘Bobby Bonilla Day’ possible. The Mets deferred a crazy amount of Bonilla’s contract in 2000 because they were sure they could make a lot more if they invested with Madoff.

The Wilpon family (who owned the Mets at the time) had many accounts with Madoff, who claimed he was returning 12 to 15 percent per year. So when they didn’t want Bobby Bonilla anymore, they thought restructuring his contract to where he’d be making 8% per year down the road was no big deal. After all, they’d have much more than that from the Madoff money. The only problem was that they never saw the money they had invested with Bernie Madoff, and Bobby Bonilla makes $1.19 Million on every July 1 until 2035.

So, Bobby Bonilla and his fans are thanking Bernie Madoff for his service.

Let’s all pour one out for Bernie Madoff when Bobby Bonilla Day rolls around this year.
