Patriots Offensive Play-Caller Officially Revealed

It appears as though the Patriots have a new offensive play-caller: Matt Patricia.

After Josh McDaniels left the Patriots sidelines to become the head coach for the Raiders, it was initially reported that defensive-minded Matt Patricia was going to have a role in calling the offensive plays. And when reports began swirling about the dismal Patriots offense in Training Camp, Patricia was roasted all over the web.

Tonight it has been confirmed: Matt Patricia is currently the play-caller for New England.

During their first preseason game against the Giants, Patricia was very clearly looking at a call sheet and relaying plays with the team on offense.

Earlier in the offseason, Bill Belichick gave his typical non-answer when asked about the rumors that he was turning to Matt Patricia to call his offense.

“I’ve called them and I haven’t called them,” Belichick said at the time. “Other people have called them and haven’t called them. We’ll see.”

In their preseason game, Patricia seemed to quiet his many doubters (for now) when leading the team down the field for an impressive touchdown drive while veteran Brian Hoyer was playing quarterback.

When the Patriots last won the Super Bowl in 2019, Patricia was given a lot of credit for his ability to call a dominant defense. But when he was given a chance to become a head coach in Detroit, he failed miserably.

Now, Matt Patricia is back teamed up with Bill Belichick. And both coaches are setting themselves up for heavy criticism if the Patriots offense fails to meet expectations this season.
