Donovan Mitchell Trade Rumors: Knicks Reportedly Floated RJ Barrett Before Agreeing to Extension

Will Donovan Mitchell still be a member of the Utah Jazz when the NBA season rolls around?

Earlier in the offseason, it was revealed that the Jazz were taking calls on their most valuable asset. And while the New York Knicks immediately emerged as a potential suitor for Mitchell, nothing has come to fruition as of yet.

According to reports, the Jazz still have a ridiculously high asking price for Mitchell, and apparently they rejected the latest Knicks package centered around young rising star, RJ Barrett.

Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Knicks sent an offer of Barrett and two unprotected first round picks when trying to acquire Donovan Mitchell.

“That was not deemed close enough by the Utah Jazz,” Charania reported.

After failing to acquire Mitchell in that trade offer, the Knicks have now reportedly agreed to an extension with Barrett.

Still, the Knicks seem to be the most likely team to be able to pry Mitchell out of Utah. But perhaps they’ll have to up their ante significantly before Training Camp begins.

“[Tim] MacMahon, you said I believe last week that you thought that the Jazz would make a Donovan Mitchell trade before the [regular season] opener,” NBA insider Brian Windhorst said. “And it sounds to me in talking to people around the league that the Jazz want to try to go even sooner than that. They want to go before training camp.

“… It does sound as I talk to folks in the league that the Jazz are trying to apply the gas here,” Windhorst continued. “To try to juice the offer, especially juice the offer from the New York Knicks.”
